Space Ottery: May the Horse be with You - January 2011
Written by Steve Chapman; directed by Ali Owen
The Institute, Ottery St Mary had once again been transformed for Ottery Community Theatre’s annual Pantomime. Their offering was the futuristic adventure, Space Ottery (May the Horse be with You.) In the Community Theatre’s long standing tradition, this was an original script, penned by new playwright Steve Chapman. Steve had woven a tale inspired by Sci Fi TV and film dramas, incorporating aliens and space travel with all the magic of pantomime.
Ottery has been threatened by the arrival of Lord Thargg, from the planet Thargg, who plans to take over the world starting, logically enough, with Ottery St Mary. His plans seem bound to succeed until two humble office cleaners, Dame Anne Droyd and her friend “I” Pod reveal their true identities as “Alien Busters”. Meanwhile, Ottery’s own Space programme to place a rover on Mars runs into difficulties due to lack of funding and their hapless computer system “Cheap Thought”. All seems lost until the intervention of the unlikely combination of the vicar, a cider drinking farmer and a horse, save the day. All ends happily – what a surprise!
